Pets age much more rapidly than people, and they still face the same challenges we associate with getting older. Common issues include a loss of mobility, lowered energy, loss of eyesight or hearing, and a host of diseases and other health conditions.
Arthritis is an issue we frequently treat in senior pets. Identifiable by consistent issues in mobility and signs of pain, arthritis affects the bones in older pets and makes movement painful, but targeted pain treatment and exercise can reduce the impact. Senior pets also face a higher risk of heart, kidney, and liver disease, which we recommend screening for more regularly in order to treat them pre-emptively. Other illnesses, such as cancer and diabetes, tend to arise more frequently in senior pets, and our skilled veterinary team works to identify these issues early one, while they’re far easier to manage.
Because of the heightened health risks senior pets face, we typically recommend having your senior pet seen by our team at least twice a year instead of only once. This way, we can more reliably stay on top of your pet’s health and identify issues as they arise, giving our veterinarians the chance to treat them and help your senior pet enjoy their old age with comfort and dignity.
